BARANGAY Ginebra guard Jayjay Helterbrand was named Most Valuable Player of the 2008-09 Philippine Basketball Association season during the annual Leo Awards on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Helterbrand, also the best player of the Fiesta Conference, won via landslide over Arwind Santos of Burger King and Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel Beer.
The five-foot-11 guard amassed 3,220 votes to earn his first MVP award. He became the second Ginebra player to win the title after Eric Menk in the 2004-05 season.
Santos, who also finished second to Sta. Lucia’s Kelly Williams last season in the MVP voting, garnered 733 votes while Hontiveros got 650.
Helterbrand also led the Mythical First Team that included Santos, Talk ’N Text’s Mark Cardona, San Miguel forward Anthony Washington and Coca-Cola center Asi Taulava.
